From what I've seen online the seal in question seems like it can go bad with age and time, is this true as well? Please help me out because I don't want to pull the trigger on having my transmission rebuilt if it's just leaking from an old/bad seal. He is okay with emailing pictures of what he sees when he takes apart the transmission. Which will cost significantly more than just having the seal replaced. The person who will be working on my car said that the seals don't go bad on their own and that something within the transmission caused the seal to go bad and that I will probably need to have my transmission rebuilt. This car is 14 years old with 153000 miles so it would make sense to me if the seal has gone bad because of age and whoever owned the vehicle before me probably didn't do proper maintenance on the transmission such as changing fluids/filter. Is this true? I'm pretty sure that seals go bad over time because they're made of rubber, and heat and age mixed with rubber/plastic causes those things to become dry/crack/become brittle. He said that they don't deteriorate on their own over time and that something within the transmission caused it to go bad, he thinks that it is the pump that made the seal go bad by pushing on the seal. The guy who works on transmissions said that the front main seal (Input shaft seal, front transmission seal) is what is causing the leaking of transmission fluid.
